A Visual Journey
Melissa Flynn was born and raised in Metro Detroit, Michigan. She began her art career in high school and was awarded a scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Columbus, Ohio. She also became a licensed hair stylist at the age of 18 to support herself while she pursued her art career. While at CCAD, she trained in a broad range of studio mediums including: oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, ceramic sculpture, glass blowing, and metal sculpture. CCAD is known among US art schools for its rigorous curriculum, and it was via this intense college training that Flynn not only honed her skills as a fine artist, but also became accustomed to hard work; a skill set that has stuck with her throughout her professional life.
After graduating from CCAD with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, she moved to Los Angeles and began working in a variety of corporate settings, doing graphic design and digital photography. She eventually branched off and began working as a freelance graphic designer for such companies as Nike Entertainment, Rainbow Editorial and the Southern California Anti-Smoking Campaign. Throughout it all, Flynn continued doing hair professionally, and painting in her free time.
Hairstyling took off for Flynn around this time, and she became a well-respected, fully booked stylist in the LA area for many years. Fine art, however, never took a backseat...despite her busy schedule! In 2015 Flynn began working with fiber and started her Etsy business to showcase and sell her designs. Simultaneously, she utilizes her skills as a painter and climbs up on scaffolds to paint murals (indoor and outdoor) to beautify neighborhoods, homes, or rooms. She formally ended her hair styling career in 2017 in order to dedicate herself fully to fine/street art work.
She resides with her family in the artist's community of Topanga, California, where she takes inspiration from the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside and wildlife. An ever-evolving artist & artisan, Flynn now focuses on mural painting and fiber art via commissioned pieces for private collectors, commercial clients and philanthropic fundraising.
